The Mystery of Player X…

Whoever he may be, Player X is going to be in some deep trouble in the lockerroom.
If you haven’t been reading, Player X is ESPN the Magazine’s bid to actually become something people talk about–even, we assume, people who don’t read Bill Simmons. He’s a real live NFL player who blogs on everything from lockerroom dirt to groupie behavior. His most recent column, which came out yesterday, is about a truly taboo topic: injury.
For something so omnipresent, you’d think NFL players would be a lot more upfront about what it takes to play football: the crazy effort, the pain? No. Clearly, that would not be manly. So when this guy is blogging about how he knows he’s done his job if he gets out of bed Monday morning and it takes him ten steps to straighten his back, that’s whining to most players.
Not to mention, he said the unsayable: someone is going to die on the field. He talks in graphic–not to say icky, but ewww, fingers exploding like melons–terms about the injuries he’s seen. And about how nobody will talk about them.
Someday, the players will figure out who this guy is. He’s been writing since August 2009, we’re actually surprised nobody’s leaked it yet. What will that do to his team chemistry? To his season? His career? To his family life? He says even his family doesn’t know he’s doing this. And his agent? Gonna be pissed.
We think its an interesting journalistic experiment, but we’re not sure why anyone would agree to do it. He says he thinks its important….more than the game he supposedly loves?

This is very interesting. I hope he does not get caught for a long time.
