Show Your Spirit While You Drink Beer…it?

See, that title is a small–very small–example of why UPH found ourselves cheering in the bleachers instead of with the pompom squad.
But this post isn’t about whether or not we can do the splits.  (Hint: yes, but you don’t get to see.)  It’s about two things most of our readers like:
1. School spirit
2. Beer!
Because now [...]

Caster Semenya and Gendered Athletics

Caster Semenya, as most will know, is the runner who recently won a gold medal in the women’s 800 meter race in the world championships.  She was given her medal, but many are unhappy….because they think she’s a man?
Sort of.
Despite the assurances of Semenya and her family that she is a woman, she will undergo [...]

OMG Sports Blogz R EVILL!!!!111

So, we guess we picked a bad time to start this blog.
We’re fascinated by the immediacy that the 24 hour news cycle and the advent of the internet have brought to the world of sports reporting.   (Except when our twitter feed refreshes faster than our MLB GameDay and we find out that in fact someone [...]

Plaxico In Stripes, Judicial System Sucks

Plaxico Burress–best known for breaking the hearts of Pats fans and shooting himself in the leg–pled guilty to a weapons charge today and will serve two years in jail.  Burress pled to a lesser charge than those with which he was originally saddled,  agreeing to plead guilty to one count of criminal posession of a [...]

NCAA Might Vacate Memphis Wins, Calipari’s Kind of Angsty About It

Several sources tell ESPN that the word “vacate” appears multiple times in the NCAA’s report of it’s findings about Memphis’ possible violations.  A Memphis newspaper, citing an unnamed source, says that Memphis will be forced to vacate the whole season and the Final Four appearance of 2007-2009.
The charges against Memphis stem from the allegation that [...]

Lance Berkman + Jesus = Night At the Ballpark?

The Astros are struggling to find promotions that’ll bring people to the ballpark now that they’re basically out of contention.  (Yesterday, their loss put them 10 games back of the Cards in the NL Central and 9 games back for the NL wild card.
Saturday’s ’s gimmick is Faith and Family Night.  It’ll feature a pregame [...]

Twitter Hands Us Some Interesting Favre Reactions

Bill Simmons is pissed.  How do we know? He’s joking that good next steps for Favre include admitting he hates cheese curds and dark beer and calling Wisconsin homegirls “Laverne and Shirley” “ugly and not funny”.
We know this because we follow him on Twitter.  Twitter’s great for us, and for funny people like Simmons, because [...]

More Breaking News: Pudge Rodriguez to Rangers

Talk about post-deadline differencemakers!
Pudge Rodriguez is headed back to Arlington to lend his bat and leadership to the Rangers. Rodriguez, who has been with the Astros, is batting only .251 this year in 93 games, but his veteran presence will provide depth and a soothing influence in the playoff run, where  Texas doesn’t usually find [...]

Hey Hey, Women’s MMA

This last weekend, probably the highest profile event ever in women’s Mixed Martial Arts took place: the fight between Gina Carano and Christiane “Cyborg” Santos.  The lovely, telegenic Carano was heavily favored, but she was knocked out by Santos.
MMA fans with whom UPH has spoken weren’t thrilled with the fight.  Even casual fans said the [...]

Breaking News: Brett Freakin’ Favre

We used to love Brett Favre.  (He won the first Superbowl we remember watching, after all, and we admit to growing up singing “On, Wisconsin.”)  We defended him when he went back and forth about retiring.  Again and again.  After all, we reasoned, he loved the game! He couldn’t bring himself to leave!
You know what? [...]
