8/16/48 RIP to the Sultan of Swat: Babe Ruth dies at age 53.
8/17 /50 The first time in the modern era that two players hit inside the park homeruns on the same day: Pee Wee Reese does it for the Dodgers and Sam Calderone for the Giants.
8/18/83 The youngest woman ever to swim the English Channel, Samantha Druce, age 12 years and 119 days, does so.
8/19/1900 The only Olympic cricket match….ever. The next day, when the game completes, Britain beats France. (Go figure. Also, this is probably the only time we’ll ever mention cricket. Ever.)

8/21/47 The first Little League World Series concludes, won by the Maynard Midgets of Williamsport, PA
8/22 Althea Gibson becomes the first African-American tennis player to be accepted into a national competition
