End of an Era: Jason Giambi Released by Athletics
Jason Giambi, who became for many the face of (the beginning of) the steroids era in baseball has been released by the Oakland Athletics, the team with which he first made the majors back in 1995. He spent most of his career with the New York Yankees, but missed their World Series wins by a couple of years. This year, back with the As, he’d been batting under the Mendoza Line, even before he went on the DL July 20th.
As our friends at The Sports Chick Blog pointed out? He was also funny, crazy, and…yum.
Will he find a job? Maybe, if he gets healthy, you could see him sitting on a bench in September for a non-contender. If he’s lucky, UPH could see someone who might need a bat (Orioles, here’s lookin’ at you…) offering him a cheap contract as a bench player with some performance and health incentives attached.
UPH was so excited when he came back…after all the steroids, he proved himself again as a true athlete. We’d love to see him back in the mix, but his fielding was never fabulous, and his bat speed has become a liabillity. Still, he plays hard, and we’ll hope for the best.
’til then, happy trails, JG.
